To The Leaves

by: Kathleen Bauer

I still do not know why some may look at you,

at the beauty you were put on this earth to be,

and only see pollution.

when they cast you aside,

caged inside plastic garbage bags

with no holes for breath.

that, too,

is a form of

pollution.

there is an entire science behind

the development and innovation of the ways to

imprison you,

bury you,

as if you are dead,

not seeing that you still have a different life.

your afterlife.

all the sudden

horrors you endure: first the rake

then the machine, then

electric power, more

sustainable.

how does one look at you

gracing the ground with your mere

elegance that you did not even try for

and see only something

begging to be

removed?

how do you still do it

year after year?
