Don’t Blink

By Lily Papendick

The air tastes sweet and the caterpillar sighs

as the sun rests his weary head in his hands.

While dusk is layered in amber and mystique,

night is colored the sibylline hues of ebony and indigo;

a velvet blanket silencing the world to sleep.

Blackberry skies are sprinkled with stars

and the soft moonlight falls upon the river,

a deep chamber of reflection aglow with memories of the past.

The silver soul of night blends into the warmth of a golden dawn,

and the morning sky, blushing a rosy red,

paints the promise of a new day.

A breeze effervescent with energy

rouses the earth from her mellow reverie,

awakening the chrysalis from its state of serenity.

As the flowers shed their dresses of dew,

the wings beat,

the world pauses,

and the air tastes of sentiment as the butterfly flies.
